Using common sense to correct a negative behavior, keeping the punishment simple and not complicated. The punishment for knocking over the picture frame is to clean up the mess and take a time out to reflect on the bad behavior and that makes this appropriate for a defiant child. o : the has exhibited bad behavior in the house, this action removes a child from an enjoyable situation and isolated for a period of time until troubled or negative behavior has been corrected. · o I would state that every parent and every teacher has their own methods of what is considered effective when it comes to dealing with defiant children, what works for one may not work for the others. · o Providing a smile for a child’s good behavior Positive feedback is a verbal feedback that tells the child he or she is doing well and make progress. The more specific the praise is the more effective it is in modifying behavior. This approach is effective because it lets the child or children know what they are doing correctly. A child who is defiant this approach will allow for them to know what they are doing right and to continue to make the right choice. 2). Social Reinforcement is a smile, hugs, and kind words are social reinforcers, as an adult attention (which is why teachers must be careful when responding to negative behavior). It is often the best kind of reinforcement because it creates important trust and relationships. This approach to giving a defiant child a reward is positive and it also s it s to build trust between the child and teacher. : 1). Time Out is a punishment that removes a child from a pleasurable, engaging, or enjoyable situation. The setting should not be reinforcing and the duration of the punishment should be quite short. A time out should be used sparingly and at the highest end of a behavioral continuum. It end up being used frequently, it is not working. This type of reinforcement for a defiant child could give then a few minutes to think of what was happening and how to fix the problem so it doesn’t happen again. 2). Modeling is a very powerful way to teach both appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. It works by the child observing an adult or child who has prestige and competence in a certain behavior or skill. The adults or children whom other children see as behavioral and learning models must be extremely consistent in their behaviors. Now it’s ineffective to say to a child “do as I say, not as i do!” This approach could work for a defiant child so that they know what kind of behaviors they should be doing or not doing while being reminded of what the classroom or home rules are. Something that I would use with a three year in regards to a extrinsic reward is social reinforcement. I like this because it give students a positive reward and something that can be held on a lot longer than something that is tangible. I believe that children need more social reinforcement than anything.
